Tetsu

Tetsu is a temperature controlled kettle based off of the traditional form of a Tetsubin.  Tetsubin (鉄瓶) are Japanese cast-iron kettles with a pouring spout, a lid, and a handle crossing over the top, used for boiling and pouring hot water for drinking purposes, such as for making tea. By juxtaposing tradition with technology, Tetsu seeks to elevate the ritual of consuming tea.

Tea at its very highest level can be viewed as ceremonial, yet often times it is seen as casual. Most users often dont realize that tea has as much depth and complexity as beer, wine, or coffee. It is a delicate flavor profile that is highly dependant on temperature, tea type, and brewing time. Tetsu seeks to bring back the ritual of tea in a more accessible way. By getting rid of tea bags, introducing tactility, and incorporating technology Tetsu bridges the gap between tradition and modernity.

By introducing modern advancements Tetsu remains as something that is familiar in form and function, with the added benefit of precision. Intricate machined aluminium and frosted glass as well as surfacing tell a story of considered material and shape. Machined dials and soft transitions speak to luxury, while remaining easy and accessible to use in the every day.

Boiling water and then letting it cool removes oxygen from the water and decreases the flavor of the tea. It's better to bring water up to (rather than down to) the appropriate temperature.
